Oud and

Sustainability

Oud is a natural product derived from certain species of the Aquilaria agarwood tree. It has great commercial value, which means that the trees themselves are often at risk of over-exploitation.

In many of the countries in which Aquilaria trees grow, deforestation is already a serious problem, and the trees are listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Without careful stewardship, some species could face local or even global extinction.

At the Kingdom of Oud, we work with only the most responsible growers, and because we buy direct from the source, we know the methods that they use to grow, harvest and process the much-prized agarwood. They adhere to the very highest environmental and ethical standards.

We work with just one principal supplier, which has plantations and processing facilities in eight countries. Its whole business depends on there being reliable supplies of agarwood in the future so it is committed to preserving the various species and to raising global awareness of the trees’ importance and value.

Wild

Agarwood Trees

Aquilaria trees that grow in the wild tend to be older and larger than those grown in plantations. Their resinous agarwood can therefore develop over many decades. This builds the intensity of the fragrance and, as a result, wild-grown agarwood is both expensive and rare. Some of the products we supply come from wild trees, but for each tree that is affected, our supplier plants several new trees in the same environment in order to build local stocks.

Plantation-Grown

Agarwood Trees

In order to secure supplies and protect the various Aquilaria species, producers also cultivate trees in plantations. This means that agarwood can be harvested more easily and in larger quantities, and this is helping to drive down the cost of certain oud oils and related products. The majority of our products come from plantation-grown agarwood.
